What should I wear for my newborn session?

First of all—congratulations, Mama! 💕 Whether you just welcomed your little one or are counting down the last days of pregnancy, this is such a beautiful, emotional, and overwhelming season of life.

One of the questions I hear most often is:“What should I wear for my newborn session?”

And let me just say—if you’re asking that, you’re not alone. Between sleepless nights, endless baby snuggles, and trying to remember the last time you drank a full cup of coffee while it was still warm… the last thing you want is to stress about clothes. I’ve got you covered. ✨

Keep It Simple with Soft & Neutral Colors

Think soft creams, warm beiges, gentle grays, or pastels. These tones look beautiful in photos and keep the focus right where it belongs—on your sweet new baby. Plus, neutrals create that dreamy, timeless look most moms love.

(And don’t worry if your wardrobe feels limited right now—you don’t need a big shopping trip. A cozy cream sweater or a simple soft dress works perfectly!)

Comfort is Key

Newborn sessions often include lots of pauses for feeding, soothing, and cuddling. You’ll want something you feel good moving and sitting in. Flowing dresses, leggings with a soft tunic, or a favorite knit sweater are all great choices. If you’re comfortable, you’ll naturally look more relaxed—and that shines through in the photos.

Flattering Styles for New Moms

Your body just did something incredible. You deserve outfits that feel gentle and flattering without trying too hard. A few ideas:

  • Flowy dresses that drape beautifully

  • Soft, oversized cardigans for layering

  • Three-quarter sleeves (always flattering in photos!)

  • Wrap-style tops or dresses that give a lovely shape

Coordinate with Family (But Don’t Match!)

If your partner or older kiddos are joining, pick outfits that blend together without being identical. For example, if you’re in a soft blush dress, your partner could wear light gray, and your toddler could be in beige. Together, the colors feel natural and connected without looking too “matchy-matchy.”

Add Texture Instead of Patterns

Chunky patterns or logos can pull attention away from your baby. Instead, think lace, knits, or linen. These textures add depth and warmth without overwhelming the image.

My Biggest Tip: Be Yourself

At the end of the day, the “perfect” outfit is one that makes you feel like you. Whether that’s a flowy dress, a cozy sweater, or the blouse you love most—you’re going to look beautiful, because your love for your baby will shine brighter than anything you wear.

Something from my heart

Your newborn session isn’t about perfection—it’s about love, connection, and those fleeting first days you’ll never want to forget. I’ll guide you every step of the way so you can relax and soak in the moment.
